چکیده

The objective of this paper is to gain insight into finite element discretizations of shells using the basic shell mathematical model and, in particular, regarding the sources of ‘‘locking’’. We briefly review the ‘‘basic shell mathematical model’’ and present a formulation of shell finite elements based on this model. These shell finite elements are equivalent to the widely-used continuum mechanics based shell finite elements. We consider a free hyperboloid shell problem, which is known to be difficult to solve accurately. Using a fine mesh of MITC9 elements based on the basic shell mathematical model, a detailed analysis is performed giving the distributions of all strain terms. A similar analysis using the MITC6 shell element shows why this element locks when the shell thickness is very small. 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

On the asymptotic behavior of shell structures and the evaluation in finite element solutions

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the asymptotic behavior of a shell structure, as the thickness (t) approaches zero, can be evaluated numerically. We consider three representative shell structural problems; the original Scordelis–Lo roof shell problem, a herein proposed modified Scordelis–Lo roof shell problem and the partly clamped hyperbolic paraboloid shell problem. The asym...

A Continuum Shell-beam Finite Element Modeling of Buried Pipes with 90-degree Elbow Subjected to Earthquake Excitations

In the current work, the seismic analysis of bent region in buried pipes is performed, and effects of soil properties and modeling methods on pipe’s response are investigated. To do this task Beam, Beam-Shell Finite Element modeling and a Continuum shell FE models of a 90 degrees elbow are employed. In the Beam model, the pipe is simulated by beam elements while combined shell-beam elements a...

Curls and curves of a shell interweave its various strain modes and link them together. This interactional behavior has yet frustrated all attempts for the construction of shell templates, which needs for an individual element test in traditional approaches. Such a test fails to work for shell elements and must be reconstructed. In this paper, it is tried to study shell interactional behavior a...

Development of MITC isotropic triangular shell finite elements

We present a simple methodology to design isotropic triangular shell finite elements based on the Mixed Interpolation of Tensorial Components (MITC) approach. Several mixed-interpolated isotropic triangular shell finite elements are proposed. We perform well-established numerical tests and show the performance of the new elements. 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

An Efficient Strain Based Cylindrical Shell Finite Element

The need for compatibility between degrees of freedom of various elements is a major problem encountered in practice during the modeling of complex structures; the problem is generally solved by an additional rotational degree of freedom [1-3]. This present paper investigates possible improvements to the performances of strain based cylindrical shell finite element [4] by introducing an additio...
